Not you without me, not me without you.

Two proud kingdoms stand on opposite shores, with only a bloody history between them.

As best friend and lady-in-waiting to the princess, Branwen is guided by two principles: devotion to her homeland and hatred for the raiders who killed her parents. When she unknowingly saves the life of her enemy, he awakens her ancient healing magic and opens her heart. Branwen begins to dream of peace, but the princess she serves is not so easily convinced. Fighting for what’s right, even as her powers grow beyond her control, will set Branwen against both her best friend and the only man she’s ever loved.

I received an aARC of this book from NetGalley and I was very excited to start it.  When I saw it was a Tristan and Iseut retelling I immediately went and did a little research on the legend of the star crossed lovers.  Imagine my surprise when I realized the main character is Branwen and her cousin is Princess Eseut.  Now I was really intrigued at where the story is going to take me.

I hate and I love.

That is basically how I feel about this book.  Now, before you get alarmed at why I say I hate it, let me tell you why I love it.

Pérez crafts a beautifully rich and complex world in which the story unfolds.  Which is really unsurprising because she has a PhD in Medieval Literature.  I loved the detail she put into crafting the world.   It’s definitely one of the richest stories I’ve read in a long time.

The story focuses on Branwen, who is a lady-in-waiting to her cousin and best friend, Princess Eseut.  I loved Branwen’s character.  She was patient, kind, and flawed.  She loves her cousin Essy, and often sacrifices her happiness for Essy.  I was swooning when she finds and rescues Tristan.  Their relationship was so sweet and special.

Branwen’s story is one that I think will stick with me for a while.  I am anxious to see where her story goes, and I am looking forward to continuing her journey.

Now, why I hate it?

That ending guys.  It killed me. It hurt and left me desperately needing more.  And I really think the wait might just kill me.
